• Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius orders humane treatment for Christians and slaves throughout the Empire.
• Irenaeus, bishop of Lugdunum, becomes the first to write (in Against Heresies) that there are only four divinely inspired gospels, eg Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. He is also the first to write that Gospel of Luke was written by Luke the physician (Paul's companion) and that the Gospel of John was written by John, the son of Zebedee.
