September 14: Fourth and final session of the Second Vatican Council opens.
December 7: The Catholic-Orthodox Joint Declaration of 1965 rescinds the mutual excommunications of 1054 between Pope Leo IX and the Patriarch of Constantinople, Michael Cerularius, beginning the process of reconciliation between the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodoxy. The excommunications were a major cause of the Great Schism.
December 8: The Second Vatican Council closes.
