Blasphemy

From Christianity Knowledge Base

Blasphemy is a sin against God. It can consist of cursing God, assuming God's authority, or profaning that which has been dedicated to God. The Second Commandment warns against blasphemy: "You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain." Exodus 20:7, Deuteromomy 5:11

In the Law of Moses, the punishment for blasphemy is stoning Leviticus 24:16. The Gospel of John records two attempts to stone Jesus for equating himself with God John 8:58-59, John 10:30-33, but it was not yet his time. The charge of blasphemy was also raised against Jesus at the Sanhedrin Trial Matthew 12:64-65, Mark 14:62-64.

Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the one unforgivable sin Matthew 12:31-32, Mark 3:29, Luke 12:10
