Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus(c. 245–c. 312), born Διοκλής (Diocles) and known in English as Diocletian, was Roman Emperor from November 20, 284 to May 1, 305.

Diocletian began the last and greatest persecution of Christians by the Roman Empire on February 24, 303.
