Part of the series on the
Holy Spirit

A Gift of the Holy Spirit is a supernatural power given to an individual or group at any time.

The term gifts is used in preference to abilities when refereing to what someone has, in reference to that fact that all these things are very literally gifts from God (through the Holy Spirit), and not the result of the persons own powers or abilities.

In Charismatic belief systems, these gifts are believed to still be accessible; however, in Cessationism beliefs, it is believed that the gifts were available during the time of Christ and are never or rarely seen in modern times.

According to Charismatic belief, any of the miracles performed by Jesus in the Bible can be performed by man today.

List of Gifts[]

The gifts named in Corinthians 12 are:

  • Wisdom
  • Knowledge
  • Faith
  • Healing
  • Miracles
  • Prophecy
  • Distinguishing between spirits
  • Speaking in tongues
  • Interpretation of tougues

There are occurrences of other gifts seen in the Bible which are not mentioned here. Similarly, there are reports of people using other gifts that are not named in this passage.

It is rare to see someone who has been given a specific gift. Usually, gifts are given as and when they are needed, though some people repeatedly receive the same gift in the ministry they are taking part in.
