Hellenistic refers to the culture that sprang out of ancient Greece. Alexander the Great spread Hellenism to the borders of India through his conquests. Later, the eastern half of the Roman Empire was dominated by Hellenistic culture. The Jews of Judea and Galilee resisted Hellenisitic culture, although the Jews in the diaspora were more thoroughly assimilated into Hellenistic culture. Paul of Tarsus, for example, was a Hellenized Jew.
