- 451: Council of Chalcedon closes. This council affirmed the hypostatic union and condemned monophysitism. The council is not accepted by the Oriental Orthodoxy.
- 1908: The {old) Catholic Encyclopedia recieves a Nihil Obstat ("nothing hinders") from official censor Remy Lafort and an Imprimatur ("let it be printed") from John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York.
- 1922: The Ottoman Empire abolishes the sultanate.
- 1948: Athenagoras I (Spyrou) of Constantinople elected Patriarch of Constantinople, the head of the Eastern Orthodoxy.
- 1950: Pope Pius XII issues the apostolic constitution, Munificentissimus Deus, which defines ex cathedra the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven.
