Salvation, in Christian context, is the state of being saved from the consequences of Sin. Due to sin's death-dealing nature, (Ezekiel 18:4b "The soul who sins shall die.") if the status-quo was maintained after the fall, then God, a being of infinite justice, would have no choice but to send everyone in the world who ever lived to Hell, which would be bad. More importantly, bad to God's perspective as well as ours, as the Bible says that God wishes that none should perish. (2 Peter 3:9 "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance."). Salvation is obtained through faith in Christ and being born again, in corresponding to John 3:16 and [(John 3:1-21)whereas one's old self dies to sin, (insert the quote about that) and is reborn as a new creature. By being born again, one is freed from Sin, (Insert quote about that one) and thusly the punishment thereof, because Christ pays the penalty for it instead of you. Faith in Christ leads to being born again, as God does not send SWAT teams of angels to beat you up and then resurrect you on the street to force you to have faith in Him, so it can pretty much only be faith leading to being born again. Salvation is generally difficult to understand for most people (insert the "preaching of the cross is foolishness to men" quote) without understanding of The Law, namely, the Ten Commandments and all other laws set down by God in the Old Testament.
