Terah was the son of Nahor the Elder and the father of Abraham, Nahor (the younger) and Haran the father of Lot. Terah became a father at the age of 70, and lived to be 205. Terah took his family from Ur of the Chaladees as far as the city of Haran in Paddan Aram (probably Syria; Nahor's descendant Bethuel and his chidren Laban and Rebekkah are all referred to as Syrians; cf Genesis 25:20, 28:2-7).

Unlike his son Abraham, Terah worshiped false gods.

Terah is also the name of a place the Israelites camped during the Exodus (cf. Numbers 33:27-28).
