My family believes that in His infinite wisdom, God intended for the family to be society's safety net. The idea was multi-generational interaction where one generation took care and taught the next generation. The family is supposed to "be there" for each other. Every member responsible for helping out when needed. This never became more real than last March when my 46yr old brother-in-law suffered a massive stroke as a result of a cardiac aneurysm that burst. He should have died. However, because God loves him so much and didn't want him to be forever lost (he isn't a believer......yet!), He spared him and allowed him to survive. Now, a little over a year later, he is still struggling to recover. He will most likely never walk again as he is paralyzed on his right side. His left leg isn't fully functional but at least he can somewhat move it and his only fully untouched limb is his left arm. He has learned to feed himself, to write again and basically do everything with his left hand. Not bad for someone who was always right handed. The biggest loss however, is his speech. He is trapped, mute in his brain because he can't get his brain to tell his mouth how to talk. God has taught me GREAT COMPASSION in caring for my brother-in-law in this respect. I cannot imagine not being able to communicate even though your brain knows it wants to. There but for the GRACE of GOD go I!!! I've also never felt more gratitude to my GOD for the many blessings He's given me. I thank Him for the opportunity to help my family member and pray that He always help my attitude. Sadly, other family members and society at large, see our compassion and responsibility and think we are very foolish and naive for taking our brother in and disrupting our family. When we ask for help we're told we should "think about our immediate family first" and not cheat ourselves. We're told that even social workers say family isn't really responsible for taking care of their own members if it is TOO stressful. Well, LIFE is stressful. The point is to let Jesus handle your stress and just accept His "...peace that surpasses all understanding. A peace that the world cannot give, and the world cannot take away." There comes a Peace with knowing you're doing the right thing, the "right by God" thing, even if everybody else thinks you're nuts.
Does anybody else agree?
